Fjords – The ancient Nordic waterways

There are many places of immense beauty in the world. One of our absolute favorites is the fjord system in western Norway. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated sea with steep land on three sides. And they are breathtaking!

The fjords were forged by vast glaciers, which formed in the valleys through several ice ages. These glaciers eroded the bottoms of the valleys far below sea level, cutting a steep wedge in the crust. As the ice slowly melted, these huge cavities filled with water and formed the fjords.

The word ”fjord” comes from old Norwegian, and means “where one fares through”. When travelling along one of those Nordic waterways, you may feel the echoes of the journeys of travellers from times past. You almost expect a viking ship to appear around the next bend.
